GENERAL

Data Acquisition Pty Limited manufactures a standard range of RF Receive Matrix Switching Systems, designed mainly for Military and Professional applications including:

            Shipbhoard

                        Airborne

                                     Land Mobile

                                                 Fixed Station

Systems are generally manufactured in standard 19 inch rack mounting format, however other formats such as half rack width units can be supplied for specialised applications such as Airborne or Land Mobile.   Standard Systems are available in 1U, 2U and 3U Chassis.

RF Receive Matrix Switches are also occassionally referred to as 'Antenna Selection Systems' or 'Antenna Selection Units'.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

INPUTS and OUTPUTS:            Sources            Users             Antennae            Receiver

All Switches manufactured by Data Acquisition are RECEIVE Matrix Switches.
For Receive Switches, by convention:

            Switch INPUTS are normally Antennae, and connect to Switch Horizontal ROWS.
            Switch OUTPUTS are normally Receivers, and connect to Switch Vertical COLUMNS.

To be universally correct, Matrix Switch Inputs are referred to as SOURCES (Signal Sources), and Matrix Switch Outputs are referred to as USERS (Signal Users).

            For Receive Switches:      Sources are Antennae, and Users are Receivers (equipment).
            For Transmit Switches:     Sources are Transmitters (equipment), and Users are Antennae.

NON BLOCKING OPERATION

The term 'Non Blocking' describes functionality where any User can be connected to any Source, any number from one to all Users can be connected to a single Source (Multicouple Function), but only a single Source can be connected to any one User at any one time.

SOURCE INTERLOCKING

As two Sources (Antennae) should never be connected together, this functionality describes  'Break before Make'  interlocking that controls the switching of any User (Receiver) from an existing to a new Antenna connection.

MULTICOUPLE

For a Receive Matrix, the term   'Multicouple'  refers to the operation of connecting all Users (Receivers) to a single Source (Antenna).

SENSITIVITY

Most Matrix Switches manufactured by Data Acquisition include a  'Sensitivity'  function.
This functionality applies separately to each Antenna Input, and involves modifying that input's front end RF sensitivity in some fashion, either by gain variation and / or by the addition of input protection.

QUICK SELECT

This refers to functionality whereby complete Matrix configurations can be created (offline), and stored in non-volatile memory, and are available for instant (single click) recall.

LOCAL CONTROL

This describes Switch Control from the equipment front panel, either by  'Soft-key'  operation (designated as Primary Local Control), or by Illuminated Keypad, where fitted (designated as Secondary Local Control).

REMOTE CONTROL

This describes Switch Control from a remotely located terminal, usually via a LAN.
Remote Control via the WEB can also be provided as an option.

EXPANSION

This describes functionality where RF Inputs are buffered and repeated on the Rear Panel as  'Expansion'  Outputs to allow  'daisy chaining'   of two Switches to provide increased Receiver capacity.      Note that Antenna capacity cannot be increased in a similar fashion.

RF DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS - (MATRIX SWITCH FAMILIES)

Data Acquisition Pty Ltd currently manufactures two families of    RF RECEIVE MATRIX SWITCHES    as part of it's RF Distribution Product base.

                         The  2000  Series Switches:
                                           Full Local and Remote (LAN) Control.
                                           1U    4 x 10 (Antenna to Receiver).
                                           2U    8 x 15 (Antenna to Receiver - with Expansion).

                         The  USC  Series Switches:
                                           No Local Control.    LAN or optional WEB Control only.
                                           1U    4 x 10 (Antenna to Receiver).
                                           2U    8 x 24 (Antenna to Receiver).
                                           3U    12 x 28 (Antenna to Receiver).

BANDWIDTHS - HF VHF UHF WIDEBAND

Both families (USC and 2000 Series) are available in three Bandwidth options:-
                        HF Band                                                  LowBand                                                  WideBand

HF BAND
HF Band Switches cover the standard HF spectrum from 3 MHz (nominal) to 30 MHz (nominal).
Note that the specified bandwidth is nominal only, and can be tailored to meet Customer requirements.
Optional high performance LC Filtering (5th or 7th order Elliptic) is available to provide prescise channel definition and out of band rejection.

LOWBAND    (VHF    UHF)
Lowband (referred to as Medium Band for 2000 series Switches) is a generic term used to describe any Switch having a bandwidth between HF and about 1.2 GHz upper limit.
This Switch variant can be manufactured to suit any VHF or UHF (Customer specified) bandwidth.
Optional filtering can be included to provide bandwidth definition and out of band rejection.
This Switch is also available in Wideband format, providing full spectrum coverage from 100KHz to about 1.2 GHz.

WIDEBAND
These Switches are designed to cover the maximum possible frequency spectrum.
Currently the USC Switches cover the spectrum from 100 KHz to 3.3 GHz.    Note that performance extends well below 100 KHz, but is not specified unless specifically Customer requested.
The low end response of these Switches can be limited if required.

THE USC SERIES RF RECEIVE MATRIX SWITCHES

CONTROL
All USC (Universal Switch Core) Switches are Network Control only, or WEB control as an option.
These Switches do not include any form of 'Local' control (i.e. control from the Equipment itself).
The only Front Panel mounted hardware is a (recessed) Power Switch, a LED Power Indicator, and an auxiliary USB port (see Control).

POWER MANAGEMENT SYSTEM   (ALL MODELS)
All USC Switches incorporate a full Power Management System (PMS). This system is fully transparent to the User, and maintains minimum possible total system power dissipation at all times.
The system works by monitoring all internal RF Amplifiers and automatically powering down to an idle standby condition all amplifiers not required for the current Matrix configuration.

The 2000 Series first entered service about 1998, and many early generation Units remain in service today.
Previous generations of 2U Wideband Models include:

CONTROL
All 2000 Series RF Matrix Switches are DUAL CONTROL,  i.e. 'Local' or 'Remote' control.
'Local' control is defined as control from the equipment front panel.
'Remote' control is defined as control from a remotely located terminal via a LAN.
The control system allows for control from either Local or Remote, but never both simultaneously.

Primary Local Control:
The Front Panel mounts a colour Display with four Softkeys as a minimum fit.
Full Local Switch control and status display is available from this system.   This is referred to as Primary Local Control.   Note that this 'Primary' local control system is essential for functionality in addition to Matrix control, and accordingly must always be fitted as a minimum requirement.

Secondary Local Control:
For Matrix control, the Primary system is somewhat less than user friendly, and for this reason an optional Illuminated Keypad can be provided.
This is referred to as the Secondary Local Control system.   This system provides a very user friendly interface, as well as providing a continuous and clearly defined Matrix status display.


POWER MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

THE REMOTE CONTROL SOFTWARE


COMMONALITY
The Remote Control Software (RCS) is based on PC control, and is supplied with all Switches manufactured by Data Acquisition Pty Limited.
The RCS is common to all model Switches, and is based upon a typical Graphical User Interface (GUI).

LINK
Matrix Switch Control, and current Status Display, is provided from a remotely located terminal via a standard 10/100Base-T Ethernet link, running TCP/IP.

FUNCTIONALITY
Switch Type Identification:
When serial communications is initially established with a Switch, the RCS interrogates the Switch to determine it's Model identification.   This is then used to generate the appropriate GUI for that particular Switch.

Multiple Switches
The RCS uses a 'tiled' display to control multiple Switches.
Clicking on an individual Switch Ident will bring that Switch to the foregroung, and activate it's control and status display.

Status Display:
Provided a Switch remains online, the GUI will at all times (even when the Switch is under Local Control), display the actual current status of the Matrix Switch.
Control status and some other information is displayed in the bottom information bar of the GUI

GUI
The Graphical User Interface (GUI) is a Windows based point and click system, and provides a screen presentation similar to that shown above.
Basic Matrix Control includes:
            *      Separate Columns and Rows of illuminated buttons for Matrix control,   Sensitivity,   and Multicouple.
            *      Captions on all Pushbuttons can be user defined.
            *      'Quick Select' buttons for single click recall of stored Switch configurations.

AUXILIARY FRONT PANEL CONTROL   (ALL USC SWITCHES ONLY)
On all model USC Series Switches, a standard control interface connector (USB unpowered type A) is Front Panel mounted , to facilitate set up and occassional control of the Switch via a USB connection from a Laptop Computer.   Control software is provided with the Switch.
